The Flames hockey team was originally formed thousands of miles away from Calgary. Tom Cousins was the head of a Georgia based group in 1972 who introduced hockey with Atlanta Flames to the South. Bill Putnam was chosen by the team as president and Cliff Fletcher as general manager to manage the operations. When Flames started playing in NHL, NHL was facing tough contest from World Hockey Association (WHA) that was getting popular in United States. Flames missed only two games out of their first eight NHL contests. Vancouver Nelson Skalbania and his partners got the ownership of team for million in 1980. Flames then moved north out of the Corral in Calgary.
Flames replaced Ptrick by Smythe division in their second season. They managed to set building blocks for prospect geographic contests.
